בדניאל כתיב (דניאל ח, ה) מלכות אנטיוכוס נמשל לעז, וכך בזמירות דשבת נאמר וצפיר העיזים הגדיל עצומיו, משום דעז הוא המעיז כמאמר רבותינו ז"ל בביצה פרק ב' שעל זה נקרא עז, ואין לך מעיז מן מלכות אנטיוכוס הרשע שמעיז יותר מהכל כידוע מי שעובר פי המלך בביתו הוא מעיז יותר ממי שעובר דבורו מחוץ לבית כן הוא העיז שרצה להעבירם מחוקי רצונו בהיות בית המקדש קיים לא כן מצרים ומדי ופרס שלא היה אז בית המקדש גלל כן נקרא צפיר העיזים, שהוא המעיז יותר:
In Daniel it is written that the kingdom of Antiochus is similar to a goat (see Daniel 8:5) and in the zemirot of Shabbat it is said: "the goat grew its strength" (Baruch Hashem Yom Yom, see also Daniel 8:8) because the goat ('ez) is the one that is insolent (m'eiz) as our sages z"l in the second chapter of Beitza that that is why it is called ez (Beitzah 25b), and you don't have a greater insolent that the kingdom of the evil Antiochus, that lead more than any other, as it is known: whoever transgresses the command of the king in his house is a greater leader than one who transgresses the command of the king outside the house, and so this insolent wanted to make everyone transgress the will of the King inside the Temple, and while it was standing, and this was not the case with the Egyptians, or the Medes and Persians, that then there was no Temple at all, and that is why he is called the great goat, because he was the greatest insolent.
У пророка Даниэля написано (Даниэль 8:5), что царство Антиоха уподоблено козлу. Так же и в субботних гимнах сказано: «И козёл из коз возвеличил силы свои». Ибо слово «эз» (коза) означает «дерзкий» — как говорят мудрецы наши, благословенна их память, в трактате Бейца (глава 2): потому он и назван «эз», что дерзок. И нет более дерзкого, чем царство злодея Антиоха, который дерзок более всех. Как известно, тот, кто нарушает волю царя в его собственном доме, проявляет большую дерзость, чем тот, кто нарушает его повеление вне дома. Так и он дерзнул — пожелал отвратить Израиль от законов Божественной воли, когда Храм ещё стоял. Не так было с Египтом, Мидией и Персией, при которых Храма уже не было. Потому он и назван «козёл из коз» — ибо он самый дерзкий из всех.
