הענוה – היא שורש העבודה, ועיקר לכל מעשה טוב. ומעשה העניו מקובל לפני השם. ומה הענוה? שיהיה בעיניו וחושב עצמו כאין, וצנוע ושפל רוח, ורוח נשברה. ובעודו בריא ובזמן שהוא חי בטובה – יחשוב שהשם הטיב עמו ברוב חסדיו, ושהוא אינו ראוי לאותה טובה. וגם העני יחשוב על המעט שיש לו – שאינו ראוי אפילו לאותו המעט, כי מה יש לו להחשב יותר מיתוש אחד, אך שהשם עשה עמו לפנים משורת הדין. ויודה לו על טובותיו, וישתחוה לו.
Humility - is the root of the work and the main thing for any good deed. And the humble act is acceptable before the name. And what is humility? Let it be in his eyes and think of himself as nothing, and humble and lowly, and a spirit broken. And while he is healthy and while he is living in goodness - he will think that God has done him good in most of his graces and that he is not worthy of that goodness. And the poor will also think of the little he has - which is not worthy of even that little, for what has he to count more than one mosquito, but that the name has done with him before the law. And thank him for his goodness, and bow down to him.
Анавah — корень служения и основа всякого доброго дела. И дело смиренного принято пред Именем. И что такое Анавah? — чтобы в глазах своих он считал себя как ничто, и был скромен и смирён духом, и дух сокрушён. И пока он здоров и во время, когда живёт в добре, — подумает, что Г-сподь облагодетельствовал его множеством Своего Хесед, и что он не достоин того добра. И также бедный подумает о малом, что есть у него, — что он не достоин даже того малого; ибо что у него есть, чтобы считаться более, чем один комар, но что Г-сподь поступил с ним сверх меры закона. И признает Онему Его блага и поклонится Ему.
