ויחשוב גדולת האל, וכל מעשים טובים שיוכל לעשות – אינם כי אם טיפה בים כנגד מה שהוא חייב לעשות. ויהיה עניו ושפל רוח לפני כל, אפילו לפני הקטנים ממש. ויחזיק כל אדם טוב יותר ממנו, ולא יחוש על הכבוד לקבל שבח מבני אדם. ולא יחוש על ביזוי שיבזוהו, אך ישמח על הביזוי ויחשוב שהוא ראוי לזה. ויהיה ניכר בששה סימנים הענוה, והם: (א) המחילה בעת הכעס; (ב) וענייני שבח וגנאי – שיהיה הכל שוה בעיניו; (ג) ולהצדיק הדין בעת ההפסד, ולהשפיל עצמו בעת שפע הטובה בעושר ובבנים ובחכמה; (ד) ולילך מעצמו ולפייס את מי שהרע לו; (ה) ולהתנהג במענה רך; (ו) ולהיות שמח בחלקו. אך לא יהיה עניו לפני הרשעים במילי דשמיא, אלא יוכיח אותם לפי כוחו. ולא יראה מידת הענוה בעניני המלבושים לרמאות העולם, שיהיו סבורים שהוא חסיד, והוא עושה רעות בסתר וגונב דעת הבריות.
And think the greatness of God, and all the good deeds he can do - are not but a drop in the ocean against what he must do. And will be humble and lowly before all, even before the very little ones. And will hold every man better than he, and will not feel the honor of receiving praise from human beings. And will not feel the contempt he will be despised but will rejoice in the contempt and think he deserves it. And will be evident in the six signs of humility, and they are: (A) forgiveness during anger; (B) and matters of praise and contempt - that everything is equal in his eyes; (C) and justify the law at the time of loss, and humble oneself at the time of the abundance of good in wealth and sons and in wisdom; (D) and to depart from himself and appease the one who has wronged him; (E) and behave in a soft response; (F) and be happy in his portion. But he will not be humble before the wicked in the words of Heaven but will rebuke them according to his power. And will not show the degree of humility in the eyes of those who dress to deceive of the world, who will be thought to be pious, and does evil in secret and steals public opinion.
И будет он размышлять о величии Бога, и все добрые дела, какие только сможет сделать, — не более чем капля в море против того, что он обязан сделать. И будет Анавah и смирён духом пред всеми, даже пред малыми совсем. И будет считать всякого человека лучше себя, и не будет заботиться о почёте, чтобы принимать похвалу от людей. И не будет заботиться об унижении, когда унизят его; но будет радоваться унижению и думать, что он достоин этого. И узнаваема будет Анавah по шести признакам, и они таковы: (а) прощение во время гнева; (б) в делах похвалы и порицания — чтобы всё было равно в глазах его; (в) оправдывать суд во время ущерба и унижать себя во время изобилия добра в богатстве, и в сыновьях, и в мудрости; (г) пойти самому и умилостивить того, кто сделал ему зло; (д) вести себя мягким ответом; (е) быть довольным своей долей. Но не будет он смирен перед злодеями в делах Небес, а будет увещевать их по силе своей. И да не покажет он меру Анавah в делах одежды, чтобы обмануть мир, чтобы думали, будто он благочестив, а он делает зло втайне и крадёт мнение людей.
