ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום שלישי. בשלשה ימים אלו הזכיר ערב ובקר ולא היו שם מאורות שיהיו מחייבין הערב והבקר, כי שקיעת האור הוא הערב וזריחתו הוא הבקר, אמנם הזכיר בשלשתם ערב ובקר ולא כלפי האור אלא כלפי הגלגל שהוא חוזר ומתגלגל בו כי כל חלק מחלקי הרקיע כשהוא עולה הוא לו בקר וכששוקע הוא לו ערב, אך מיום רביעי ואילך שנבראו המאורות הזכיר ערב ובקר כלפי האור.
And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. During these three days, evening and morning were mentioned, but there were no lights that would obligate the evening and morning. Because the setting of the sun is the evening and its rising is the morning, however, in these three days, evening and morning were mentioned not with regard to the light, but with regard to the celestial sphere, which turns and revolves, because every part of the firmament, when it rises, is its morning, and when it sets, it is its evening. But from the fourth day and onwards, when the luminaries were created, evening and morning were mentioned with regard to the light.
«И был вечер, и было утро, день третий» (Берешит 1:13). В течение этих трёх дней упоминались вечер и утро, но не было светил, которые делали бы обязательными вечер и утро. Ибо заход солнца — это вечер, а его восход — утро; однако в эти три дня вечер и утро упоминались не по отношению к свету, но по отношению к небесной сфере, которая поворачивается и вращается, потому что каждая часть свода, когда она восходит, — это её утро, а когда заходит, — это её вечер. Но начиная с четвёртого дня и далее, когда были сотворены светила, вечер и утро упоминались по отношению к свету.
