לא תטע לך אשרה. לשם עבודה זרה ובא לחייבו מלקות משעת נטיעה, וכן דרך עובדי אלילים כענין שכתוב (ישעיהו ס״ו:י״ז) המתקדשים והמטהרים אל הגנות.

«לא תטע לך אשרה». — ради עבודה זרה; и Писание приходит обязать его мלקות с момента посадки. И таков путь служащих идолам, как сказано: «המתקדשים והמטהרים אל הגנות» (Йешаяhу 66:17).
לא תטע לך אשרה, “do not plant for yourself an idolatrous tree.” How can a tree be idolatrous? The meaning is that the tree is intended to serve as a focus of worship. The new twist of our legislation here is that the Torah prohibits already the planting of such a tree on pain of the penalty of 39 lashes even if the tree had never served as an object of idolatry (compare Rashi). Isaiah 66,17 severely condemns people who engage in sanctifying themselves before entering such groves (in order to worship the trees). [In other words, the practice of worshipping nature in such a manner was quite widespread.]

«לא תטע לך אשרה» — «не сажай себе ашеру, идольское дерево». Как может дерево быть идольским? Смысл в том, что дерево предназначено служить объектом/центром поклонения. Новизна нашего закона здесь в том, что Torah запрещает уже саму посадку такого дерева под угрозой наказания сорока без одного удара, даже если дерево никогда не служило предметом идолопоклонства (ср. Раши). Йешаяhу 66:17 сурово порицает людей, которые «освящаются и очищаются к садам» (Йешаяhу 66:17), входя в такие рощи с целью поклоняться деревьям.
