מעשה ברבי יעקב ברבי יקר שהיה מכבד בזקנו לפני ארון הקודש וכשהיו הקהל הולכים לפני המלך או לפני השלטון אז חולץ מנעליו ואומר אני עני הם בכספים ואני ברחמים ובתחנונים נמצא הם בשלהם ואני בשלי וכן נהגו הקהל אחריו:
It happened with Rabbi Jacob, son of Rabbi Yakar,1Berakoth 63b. who would sweep (up) before the Holy Ark with his beard. And when the congregation went before the king or before the ruler then he would shod his sandals and say, “I am poor, they approach with money, but I with mercy and supplications, they with their means and I with mine,” and so the congregation became accustomed to do after him.
Случай с рабби Яаковом, сыном рабби Якира, который подметал бородой перед Арон а-Кодеш (Ковчегом Святыни). И когда община шла к царю или к правителю, он снимал обувь и говорил: я беден. Они — с серебром, а я — с мольбами и молитвами. Получается: они — со своим, а я — со своим. И община следовала его обычаю.
