יראת ה' טהורה שאין בה פקפוק אדם שמוצא מקום חטא בלא יראת אדם ובלא בושת ואינו עוזב לחטוא כי אם מפני יראת ה' זו היא עיקר היראה ואם עש כן פעמים רבות ופעם אחת תקף אותו יצרו עד שחטא לא איבד בכך את הראשונות ואל ירפה ידיו ולבו מעשות עוד טוב אבל אם מתחרט ותוהא על הראשונות אין לו שכר בעמלו אשר כבש יצרו תחלה ועל זה נאמר ובשוב צדיק מצדקתו ועשה עול לא תזכרנה עוד צדקותיו:
“The fear of the Lord is clean” (Ps. 19:10). There is no equivocation. A person who finds an occasion to sin (in a situation) where there is no cause to fear others or risk of being shamed and does not permit himself to sin because of fear of God, reflects the essence of reverence. And if he has done so many times, but once succumbed to his evil inclination and did sin, he does not forfeit his other merits. Let neither his hands nor heart weaken from continuing to do good.1Shabbath 31b. But if he regrets and is sorry for his previous deeds he receives no reward for his troubles in subduing his evil inclination initially. Concerning this it is said, “But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity” (Ezek. 18:24) none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered.
Страх Божий чистый — тот, в котором нет сомнения. Человек, который находит возможность согрешить без страха перед людьми и без стыда, и не оставляет греха иначе как из страха Божьего — это основа истинного страха. И если поступал так многократно, а один раз побуждение одолело его и он согрешил — не потерял прежних заслуг. И пусть не ослабевают руки его и сердце от того, чтобы делать добро впредь. Однако если раскаивается и сожалеет о прежнем — нет ему награды за труд его, когда покорял побуждение прежде. И об этом сказано: «А когда отвернётся праведный от праведности своей и совершит несправедливость — не вспомнятся более праведные дела его» (Йехезкель 18:24).
