ואלה הדברים יעלה אדם על לבו אל יעבוד אדם את בוראו למען יירש גן עדן אלא מאהבת ה' ומצותו שהוא יוצרו ואוהבו וכשאדם בסתר לבדו יחשוב על דברים שאינם מהוגנים שאילו היה בפני אדם לא היה עושהו מפני הבושת גם עתה לא יעשנו כי כן דרך הרשעים לעשות במחשך מעשיהם אומרים מי רואנו ומי יודענו וכן ברך החכם את תלמידיו יהי מורא שמים עליכם כמורא בשר ודם:
These things a man should ponder, let a man not serve his Creator in order to inherit the Garden of Eden,1Sifre, Deuteronomy, 11:13. but rather out of love for God and His commands, (knowing) that He created him and loves him. When a man is alone in seclusion let him reflect in this way2The meaning here is that when a person’s passions seek to drive him to sin clandestinely, let him reflect upon impure desires “… were he before.…” (See Perush.) concerning those matters that are unbecoming. Were he before another person he would not act because of the disgrace, now too let him restrain himself. For it is the way of the wicked to perform their deeds clandestinely, saying, “Who sees us? Who will find us out?” And so did the scholar bless his students, “Let the fear of Heaven be upon you as the fear for one of flesh and blood.”3Berakoth 28b.
И вот что пусть положит человек на сердце своё: пусть не служит человек Творцу своему ради наследования Ган Эдена, а из любви к Господу и к заповедям Его, ибо Он — Творец его и любит его. И когда человек в уединении один думает о вещах недостойных — если бы он был перед человеком, не сделал бы этого из-за стыда — так и теперь пусть не делает, ибо таков путь нечестивых: делать во тьме дела свои, говоря «кто видит нас и кто знает нас». И так благословил мудрец своих учеников: да будет страх Небес на вас подобен страху перед человеком из плоти и крови.
