אמרו לו הכתיב (איכה ב' א) השליך משמים ארץ תפארת ישראל וא"כ נפלו, אמר להם אם קרו לא שנו ואם שנו לא שלשו, מלה"ד למלך שהיה לו עטרה נאה על ראשו מלת נאה בכתפיו ובא לו שמועה רעה השליך העטרה מעל ראשו והמלך מלפניו:
They [Mar Rachumai's students] said to him [Mar Rachumai], "Isn't it written, 'He has cast down from the heavens [to the] land, the majesty [tiferet] of Israel' (Lamentations 2:1), and, afterward, they fell." He said to them, "If you read it, you did not repeat it, and if you repeated it, you did not do it a third time! A parable, to what may this be compared? To a king that had a beautiful crown on his head and a beautiful cloak on his shoulders. An evil tiding came to him, and he cast the crown from his head and the cloak [note a mistake in the Sefaria Hebrew] from before him.
Сказали ему: но ведь написано (Эйха 2:1) «Сбросил с небес на землю славу Израиля» — значит, они упали? Сказал им: если читали, то не повторяли, а если повторяли, то не утроили. Притча: подобно царю, у которого на голове был прекрасный венец, а на плечах — прекрасная мантия. Пришла к нему дурная весть — он сбросил венец с головы и мантию с плеч.
