ד"א מלמד שמשם פורחין הנשמות שנאמר וינפש, עד אלף דור שנאמר. (תהלים ק"ה ח) דבר צוה לאלף דור, וסמיך ליה (שם ט) אשר כרת את אברהם, ומאי אשר כרת, כרת ליה ברית, בין עשר אצבעותיו ידיו ועשר אצבעות רגליו, נתבייש אברהם א"ל הקב"ה אני הנה בריתי אתך ובו תהיה לאב המון גוים:
[Rabbi Berachiah continued,] "Another interpretation: It teaches that souls fly out from there, as it is said, 'and [He] souled [וינפש]' (Exodus 31:17) until the thousandth generation, as is said, 'A word commanded to the thousandth generation' (Psalms 105:8). And next to it, 'That was cut with Abraham' (Psalms 105:9). What is 'that was cut'? [God] cut him a covenant between the ten fingers of his hand and then toes of his foot. Abraham was shamed. The Blessed Holy One said to him, 'Here, I have covenanted with you' (Genesis 17:4) and with it, you will be 'The father of a great nation' (Genesis 17:4)"
Другое толкование: это учит, что оттуда вылетают души, ибо сказано «ва-йинафаш». На тысячу поколений, ибо сказано (Теилим 105:8) «Слово, заповеданное на тысячу поколений». И далее (там же 9) «Которое заключил с Авраамом». Что значит «заключил»? Заключил с ним завет — между десятью пальцами рук и десятью пальцами ног. Устыдился Авраам. Сказал ему Святой, благословен Он: вот завет Мой с тобой, и ты станешь отцом множества народов.
