When a person comes to rectify themselves, they can act in two ways:
The first way is to look towards holiness, even if they are still far from it, and to understand how to draw their heart closer and to awaken respect for holiness. Gradually, they approach the sacred. In this manner of work, even if they do not achieve all its levels, they already consider and dedicate themselves to cling to it. This is because, by giving it importance and a place of honor, they gain something very powerful.
The second way is to look towards impurity and see its baseness. In this manner of work, they set aside a place for impurity because they look at it to differentiate themselves from it and consider its value. Indeed, perhaps when they achieve holiness, they will be able to strike at impurity. However, in this way, perhaps its power to harm will begin to take hold, Heaven forbid.
Therefore, Moses warned them not to look at the inhabitants of the land and their abominable deeds, which are a chariot for the evil of the seven attributes of the Klipot (Shells). Instead, they should look at the holiness of the land itself, even when the seven nations dwell upon it. This was the error of the spies who looked at the inhabitants of the land to learn from the impurity which path to choose for themselves. Ultimately, this led to their severe downfall.
