וְאַחַר כֵּן שָׁמַע הָאִישׁ הַהוּא עַל אָסִיר שֶׁנָּפַל בְּיַד שׂוֹנְאוֹ וְהִגִּיעָהוּ אֶל תַּכְלִית הַצַּעַר וְהָרָעָב וְהָעֵירֹם יָמִים רַבִּים וְנִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמָיו עַל צַעֲרוֹ וּפִיֵּס לְשׂוֹנְאוֹ עַד שֶׁהִתִּירוֹ וּמָחַל לוֹ אֶת דָּמָיו וַיַּאַסְפֵהוּ הָאִישׁ אֶל בֵּיתוֹ וְהֵיטִיב לוֹ בְּמִקְצַת הַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר הֵיטִיב בּוֹ לַתִּינוֹק וְהָיָה הָאָסִיר מַכִּיר בְּטוֹבַת הָאִישׁ עָלָיו וּמוֹדֶה עָלֶיהָ יוֹתֵר מִן הַתִּינוֹק שֶׁגָּדַל בָּהּ מִפְּנֵי שֶׁיָּצָא מֵעִנְיַן הָעֹנִי וְהַצַּעַר אֶל עִנְיַן הַטּוֹבָה וְהַשַּׁלְוָה בְּעֵת שֶׁהַכָּרָתוֹ בָּהּ גְּמוּרָה עַל כֵּן הִכִּיר טוֹבַת הָאִישׁ הֶחָסִיד וְחַסְדּוֹ מְאֹד. וְהַתִּינוֹק לֹא הֵבִין מַעֲלַת הַטּוֹבָה עָלָיו אע״פ שֶׁהִתְחַזְּקָה הַכָּרָתוֹ וְהִתְיַשֵּׁב בְּדַעְתּוֹ מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהָיָה רָגִיל בָּהּ מִימֵי נַעֲרוּתוֹ.
Afterwards the [same] kind hearted man heard about a man who fell in the hands of his enemy who for a long time treated him with utmost cruelty, starved, and kept naked. The prisoner's suffering aroused the kind hearted man's pity. He appeased the enemy until the enemy freed the prisoner and forgave his debt. The benevolent man brought the man into his home and benefited him to a lesser extent than that which he bestowed on the infant. Yet, the man recognized the good more and was more thankful than the infant who grew up with them. The reason is because he went from a situation of destitution and suffering to one of goodness and tranquility while his mental faculties were mature. Therefore, he fully recognized the goodness and the kindness of his benefactor. But the infant did not realize the great extent of the goodness even after his perception and understanding had matured because he was used to them since his childhood.
А потом тот человек услышал о пленнике, попавшем в руки врага и доведённом до крайнего страдания, голода и наготы на протяжении многих дней. И разгорелось его милосердие о его страданиях, и он умилостивил врага, пока тот не освободил его и не простил ему выкуп за его жизнь. И тот человек забрал его в свой дом и сделал ему добро — часть того добра, которое он делал младенцу. И пленник сознавал благо того человека к нему и благодарил за него более, чем младенец, выросший в нём, — ибо он перешёл из состояния бедности и страдания в состояние блага и покоя в то время, когда его осознание этого было полным. Потому он чрезвычайно сознавал доброту и милость благочестивого мужа. А младенец не понял ценности блага к нему, хотя его познание окрепло и разум укрепился, — ибо он привык к нему с дней юности своей.
