וגדול זכות עני המחזיר אבידה לבעלים יותר מעשיר וקשה עונש העשיר שאינו מחזיר יותר מעני הכל לפי הטורח והשכר וע"פ המחשבה הטובה. חשב לזכות את הרבים ולא יכול שאין שומעין לו מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו מזכה אותן ירא אלהים יצא את כלם:
Greater is the merit of a poor man who returns a lost object to its owners than a rich man (who returns a lost object).1Pesahim 113a. The punishment of the rich man who does not return the lost object is more severe than that of the poor man. Merit corresponds to the sacrifice involved2Aboth 5:26. and the goodness of the thought. If he thought to merit the multitude but is unable to do so because they do not listen to him, Scripture regards it as if he actually merited for them.3Berakoth 6a. “For he that feareth God shall discharge himself of them all” (Eccl. 7:18).
И велика заслуга бедняка, возвращающего находку владельцам, — более, чем богача. И тяжелее наказание богача, не возвращающего, — более, чем бедняка. Всё — по мере усилий и награды, и по доброму намерению. Задумал привести многих к заслуге, но не смог, ибо не слушают его — Писание засчитывает ему, как будто привёл их к заслуге. «Боящийся Бога выполнит за всех».
