אמר ר' רחומאי מדברך נלמד שצורך העולם הזה ברא הקב"ה קודם השמים, א"ל הן, משל למה"ד למלך שביקש ליטע אילן בגנו, השגיח בכל הגן לדעת אם יש שם מעיין נובע מים להעמיד אותו, ולא מצא, אמר אחפור מים ואוציא מעין כדי שיוכל להתקיים האילן, חפר והוציא מעין נובע מים חיים ואח"כ נטע האילן ועמד ועשה פרי והצליח בשרשיו שהשקוהו תמיד מן המעיין:
Rabbi Rachumi said, “From your words, it could be learned that the Blessed Holy One created the needs of this world before the heavens.” He [Rabbi Levitas ben Tavrus] replied, “Yes. ָA parable, to what it is similar: to a king who seeks to plant a tree in his garden. He searches throughout the whole garden to know if there is a spring of flowing water to place the tree upon, and he does not find one. He says, ‘I will dig for water, and I will bring forth a spring so that the tree can be sustained.’ He dug, and out came a spring flowing with living waters. Afterward, he planted the tree, and it stood and produced fruit. It was successful in its roots because it always drinks from the spring."
Сказал рабби Рехумай: из слов твоих мы учим, что потребности этого мира Святой, благословен Он, сотворил прежде небес. Сказал ему: да. Притча: подобно царю, который пожелал посадить дерево в саду своём. Он осмотрел весь сад, чтобы узнать, есть ли там источник, бьющий водой, чтобы поддерживать его. Не нашёл и сказал: выкопаю воду и выведу источник, чтобы дерево могло существовать. Копал и вывел бьющий источник живых вод, а затем посадил дерево. И оно стояло, и приносило плоды, и укрепилось в корнях своих, ибо они постоянно питались из источника.
