The Ramban (Nachmanides) posed a question: Why was Aaron consoled with the lighting of the Menorah and not with his other duties, such as the offering of the incense, entering the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur, or the special role in the atonement of Yom Kippur? Furthermore, why was he even disheartened, considering he offered many sacrifices during the days of the dedication of the Tabernacle? And if one were to say that what he offered was obligatory, while the princes were privileged to bring voluntary offerings, the lighting of the Menorah is also a complete obligation.
The Ramban provides a parable: It is like a scholar who dedicates his entire day to the study of Torah with passion and attachment, and his heart is filled with longing for this. If someone were to come and say to him, "What is your greatness? After all, you are obligated to wear tefillin every day," this would not console him. For he has resolved to separate himself from the vanities of the world entirely, and how could this be a consolation?
The Ramban resolves that the consolation was not about the commandment of lighting the Menorah in the Tabernacle and the Temple, which are obligations, but rather it was about the future, about the Chanukah lights, which are eternal. When the Hasmoneans prevailed and defiled all the oils in the Temple, they found only one flask of oil that had enough to light for one day. Yet, a miracle occurred, and they lit with it for eight nights. Because of this, a festival was established for generations, to give thanks and praise to God (Shabbat 21b).
Thus, the lighting of the Menorah was indeed a great consolation for Aaron, as it was destined to be performed by his descendants, the Hasmonean priests, who were the heads of the priestly families.
