Key Points

The verses are [meant] to delve into the deeds of Kayin and Hevel, for one who examines the matter properly will understand the need for this, for the words that appear in the Torah came in a concise manner, and their main [meaning]—“that which is abundant, one who maintains [it with] little”—this is in the aspect of matters spoken in brief; and [they are] in the words of the Gemara and the midrashim, [i.e.,] the Oral [Torah].

Behold, that Kayin is explicit in Scripture—that there was [something] against him only because of Kayin, as is the language of the verse (Genesis 4):

“And it was at the end of days, and Kayin brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to HaKadosh Barukh Hu. And Hevel also brought, of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat; and HaKadosh Barukh Hu paid heed to Hevel and to his offering. But to Kayin and to his offering He did not pay heed; and Kayin was very angered, and his face fell. And HaKadosh Barukh Hu said to Kayin: Why are you angered, and why has your face fallen? Surely, if you do well, there is uplift; and if you do not do well, sin crouches at the door; and to you is its desire, but you can rule over it. And Kayin said to Hevel his brother, and it was when they were in the field, and Kayin rose up against Hevel his brother and killed him” (Genesis 4:3–8).

And only because HaKadosh Barukh Hu did not accept Kayin’s offering—this appears from the plain sense of the verse, that since He did not pay heed to Hevel and to his offering as well, therefore he rose against him and killed him. However, in the words of Chazal we find hints of the matter, [namely] the judgment and the words that were between Kayin and Hevel, and they hinted by way of allusion in the verses.

Раздел Корaх 21 (#21):
